Convert WebP Images into PNG Files
WebP is a modern image format used widely across websites because it can store photographs and graphics efficiently. It supports lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation. PNG is a long-established raster format that supports lossless compression and transparent pixels. Converting WebP to PNG can help when an editor, document workflow, upload form or older application accepts PNG more readily than WebP.
TinyImageResizer's WebP to PNG Converter accepts `.webp` files and uses the browser's image decoder and canvas API to create PNG output. The shared converter supports multiple files in the queue, previews, optional rotation in 90-degree steps and ZIP packaging when several images are converted. A single output can be downloaded directly. When an image is rotated by 90 or 270 degrees, the exported canvas dimensions are swapped to match the new orientation.
PNG uses lossless encoding for the pixels it receives, but conversion does not improve the source image or restore detail lost if the WebP was originally encoded with lossy compression. The output can also be larger than the WebP, especially for photographic images. The conversion is useful for compatibility and editing workflows, not as a guaranteed file-size reduction.
How to Convert WebP to PNG Online
Open the WebP to PNG page
Select one or more `.webp` images from your computer or phone. The file picker is configured for WebP input.
Review the queue
Check the image previews and filenames. Remove incorrect files or add more WebP images to the batch before starting.
Rotate if needed
Use the rotation control if an image appears sideways. Rotation is optional and does not crop or resize the image.
Start conversion
The browser loads each WebP image, draws its decoded pixels to a canvas and requests PNG output.
Download the PNG result
Download a single PNG directly. If you converted multiple files, download the ZIP archive and extract the PNG images.
Check the exported file
Open the PNG in the destination application and verify its dimensions, transparency and visual appearance. Keep the original WebP until you know the PNG works as expected.
Why Choose PNG Instead of WebP?
Some software, websites and business systems have older or more limited file upload rules. They may accept JPG and PNG but reject WebP. A PNG copy provides a familiar raster format for slide decks, design documents, presentation software, graphic editors and assets that need transparency. It can also be useful when handing an image to another person whose application does not recognise WebP.
PNG is not automatically better for every use. WebP may be more efficient for website photos, while PNG is often suitable for logos, interface graphics, screenshots and assets where predictable lossless storage or transparent pixels matter. If the receiving service accepts WebP and the file size is important, retaining WebP may be the better option. Choose the format based on the destination rather than converting every file by default.
Does WebP Transparency Stay Transparent?
WebP can contain an alpha channel, including partially transparent pixels around soft edges and shadows. The converter draws the decoded WebP image onto a canvas and requests PNG output, a format that supports alpha transparency.
Transparent parts of a supported source can therefore remain transparent in the PNG rather than being automatically filled with white.
However, transparency cannot be added to an image that does not already contain it. A WebP photograph with a solid background remains an opaque photograph after conversion. The tool also does not remove backgrounds, create masks or separate an image into layers. It changes the file encoding while retaining the visible pixels produced by the browser decoder.
Animated WebP and Still Image Output
WebP supports animation, but this page uses a standard browser `Image` element and draws the loaded image to a canvas.
That workflow produces a still raster image, not an animated PNG sequence. For an animated WebP, the browser image decode generally exposes a rendered frame rather than exporting the full animation timeline. Do not expect the output PNG to retain motion, frame delays or looping information.
If you need the animation, use a dedicated animated WebP or frame extraction tool that can decode the frame sequence and timing data. If you only need a still image for a document, thumbnail or design mock-up, this converter can create a PNG copy of the rendered image. Check the exported frame visually before using it in a project where the exact animation moment matters.
Dimensions, Rotation and Batch Processing
The converter uses the decoded image dimensions as the canvas size. It does not expose width and height fields, scaling presets, crop controls or a custom resolution setting. The rotation button applies right-angle turns to the previewed item and is reflected in the generated output. If you need a specific pixel size for a website or social platform, resize the PNG separately after conversion.
Multiple WebP images can be processed in one queue. The tool processes them in sequence and packages several outputs into a ZIP archive. There is no fixed public batch limit shown in the interface; very large images and large collections may require substantial browser memory. For a large archive, convert smaller groups if processing becomes slow or the browser tab runs low on memory.
File Size, Quality and Metadata
PNG stores the decoded pixels without additional lossy compression, but the resulting file can be larger than the source WebP. Photographs often compress more efficiently as WebP than as PNG. Simple icons or flat graphics may produce different results depending on their dimensions and content. This route does not include a PNG compression slider, target-size field or quality setting.
Canvas conversion creates a new image file and does not preserve all original WebP metadata or container details. Keep your source if capture information, metadata, animation or the original compressed file matters. The converter is focused on raster output for compatibility, not archival preservation of every property stored in the original WebP.
Browser Processing and Practical Uses
The local file conversion path is performed with browser image loading and canvas encoding. The image is not sent to a dedicated remote converter as part of this local processing flow. The same page can be used on desktop or mobile browsers that can decode WebP and export PNG. Very large images may take longer to decode or may exceed available memory on a phone.
WebP to PNG is useful when a file must be placed into an app that accepts PNG, when a transparent graphic needs to be edited in a familiar tool, or when a recipient cannot open WebP. It is not a background remover, image enhancer, animation converter or guaranteed compression tool. Check the actual output and retain the original WebP as a fallback.
