Convert JPG and JPEG Images to PNG

JPG and JPEG are two common filename extensions for the same widely used photographic format. JPEG uses lossy compression to keep photo files relatively compact, while PNG stores image data with lossless compression and supports transparency. A JPG to PNG conversion is useful when a workflow specifically requests PNG, when you need a PNG copy for a design project, or when a later editing step requires a format that supports an alpha channel.

TinyImageResizer's JPG to PNG Converter accepts `.jpg` and `.jpeg` files and converts selected images in the browser. The shared image converter can queue multiple files, preview the selected items, rotate a photo in 90-degree steps and export PNG copies. A single result can be downloaded directly; multiple results are packaged into a ZIP archive. The output uses the decoded image's pixel dimensions, with width and height swapped when a 90- or 270-degree rotation is applied.

It is important to understand what this conversion can and cannot do. PNG encoding is lossless for the pixels it receives, but it cannot restore detail that was discarded when the source was first saved as JPEG. The new PNG may be larger than the JPG because it uses a different compression method. Converting a JPG to PNG also does not make the original photo background transparent; a normal JPG contains opaque pixels, and those pixels remain opaque in the exported PNG.

How to Convert JPG to PNG Online

1

Open the JPG to PNG converter

Go to the dedicated page and select one or more `.jpg` or `.jpeg` images from your device. The picker is configured for JPEG files, and supported files can also be dragged into the upload area.

2

Review the conversion queue

Check the filenames and image previews. Add more JPG files if required, or remove any file that does not belong in the batch before processing.

3

Rotate an image when necessary

Use the rotation control if a selected photo appears sideways or upside down. Each rotation is applied to the rendered output; if you do not need to correct orientation, leave the image unchanged.

4

Start the PNG conversion

The converter loads each JPG into the browser, draws it to a canvas and requests a PNG export. PNG is the selected output format on this route. There is no quality slider because PNG uses lossless encoding for the rendered pixels.

5

Download the PNG files

Download a single PNG directly. If multiple images are converted, download the ZIP archive and extract the individual PNG files before using them in another application.

6

Check the exported images

Open the PNG files and verify dimensions, orientation, text and edge detail. Compare the resulting file size with the original if storage or upload limits matter.

Why Convert JPG to PNG?

Some websites, graphic design tools, content-management systems, document workflows and icon editors ask for PNG even when the source image is a JPEG. A PNG copy can fit that requirement without changing the visible image through additional lossy JPEG encoding. PNG is also convenient when the picture will be placed alongside transparent graphics or included in a project that uses alpha-capable assets. The conversion itself does not create transparency, but the PNG format can support transparency if it is introduced in a later editing step.

PNG can be a suitable intermediate format when you expect to make repeated edits. Saving a JPEG over and over can add compression artefacts, while saving an already-decoded image to PNG avoids adding another JPEG compression step at that point. However, the first JPEG's compression artefacts remain visible. It is usually better to keep the original high-quality source or original project file when possible.

Does PNG Improve JPG Image Quality?

No. Changing the file extension or encoding format cannot reconstruct pixels that were lost during an earlier JPEG save. The converter decodes the JPEG into a bitmap and writes those rendered pixels into a PNG file. The PNG preserves that bitmap without another lossy compression step, but it does not recover hidden detail, remove blur or sharpen the source photograph.

For example, a small JPG logo may show blocky edges or colour fringes around text. Exporting it as PNG prevents those particular artefacts from becoming worse due to another JPEG save, but the existing artefacts are still part of the bitmap. If the logo is available as an SVG or original transparent PNG, use that source instead of converting a compressed JPG.

Transparency: What Changes and What Does Not

PNG supports transparent pixels, but a typical JPG does not. When the browser decodes an ordinary JPEG, every pixel is rendered as an opaque colour. The PNG output therefore contains the same opaque image unless you separately remove the background with an editing tool. A JPG-to-PNG converter is not a background remover, subject cutout tool or transparency generator.

Use the PNG format when you need its compatibility or lossless encoding, not because it automatically removes a background.

Photographs: remain ordinary opaque images after conversion.
Logos with a solid background: keep that background as part of the PNG pixels.
Transparent cutouts: require a separate background-removal or masking step after conversion.
Layered editing: is not created by PNG; it remains a single flattened image.
Animation: PNG output from this route is a still image and does not create APNG animation.

Batch Conversion, Dimensions and File Size

The shared component supports multiple files in the queue and converts them sequentially. This makes it useful when preparing a group of JPEG photos for a site or application that requests PNG. When multiple images are processed, the result is packaged as a ZIP file. There is no advertised maximum file count in the current interface; practical limits depend on the amount of memory available to the browser and the dimensions of the source files.

PNG files can be significantly larger than equivalent JPEG photos because JPEG is designed for efficient lossy photo compression. The size difference depends on the image content, pixel dimensions and original JPEG quality. The converter does not include a file-size target or compression slider. If your destination limits uploads to a specific number of kilobytes, use an image compressor after conversion and check the final file size.

Browser Processing and Export Details

For local files, the converter uses the browser's image-loading and canvas APIs. It does not require a remote image-conversion endpoint for the conversion path. The code requests `image/png` from the canvas, which is a standard canvas export type. The exported image is newly encoded, so the original JPEG file bytes and all source metadata are not carried over as-is. Keep the original if EXIF data, capture time or camera information matters.

The page has a rotation control but does not provide cropping, resizing, background removal, DPI editing or manual quality settings. It also does not accept a URL in place of a local image file. The converter is intended for JPG/JPEG files selected through the page's input controls.

When to Keep JPG Instead of PNG

JPG is often the better format for photographs that need to be displayed on websites or sent through messaging services because it can produce smaller files. PNG is more suitable for graphics, screenshots, interface elements and workflows that need lossless pixel storage or transparency support. If a destination accepts both formats and file size is important, compare the actual outputs instead of assuming PNG will be smaller.

TinyImageResizer creates a PNG copy for compatibility and editing convenience. It does not improve source quality, add layers or remove backgrounds. Review the final dimensions and file size, keep your original JPG and choose the format that best matches the next stage of your workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Create PNG Copies of JPG and JPEG Images

How do I convert JPG to PNG online?
Select one or more JPG or JPEG files, review the queue, rotate any image if needed and start conversion. Download one PNG or a ZIP containing the batch.
Can I convert multiple JPG images to PNG at once?
Yes. The shared converter supports multiple files. When several images are processed, the PNG results are packaged into a ZIP archive.
Will converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. PNG preserves the decoded pixels without adding another lossy compression step, but it cannot restore details already lost in the original JPEG.
Does JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. Normal JPG pixels are opaque. The PNG output keeps the existing background unless you separately remove it with an image editor.
Will the PNG have the same dimensions as the JPG?
The output uses the decoded image dimensions. If you rotate an image by 90 or 270 degrees, the canvas width and height are swapped.
Why is the PNG file larger than the JPG?
JPEG is designed for compact photographic files using lossy compression. PNG uses lossless compression and can be larger for photographs.
Can I adjust PNG quality or compression?
No. The current tool does not expose a PNG compression or file-size slider. PNG encoding preserves the rendered pixels.
Does the converter preserve EXIF metadata?
The image is decoded and re-encoded through canvas. Do not expect the original JPEG EXIF metadata to be preserved in the PNG output.
Can I rotate JPG images before converting them?
Yes. The queue includes a rotation control that applies 90-degree turns before the new PNG is exported.
Should I use PNG or JPG for website photos?
JPG is often more compact for photographs. PNG is useful when lossless pixel storage or transparency support is needed, but converting a JPG to PNG does not add transparency.
